Raja Ravi Varma, born in 1848 in Kilimanoor, Kerala, is often regarded as one of India’s greatest painters. He is celebrated for his ability to beautifully blend Indian traditions with European techniques. Varma’s works are renowned for their lifelike depictions of Hindu deities and mythological scenes, which made classical Indian art accessible to the common people. Among his most famous paintings are “Shakuntala,” “Hamsa Damayanti,” and “Galaxy of Musicians.”

Varma’s rise to fame began with his victory at the Madras Painting Exhibition in 1873, where he won the first prize. This accolade brought him to the attention of the British colonial authorities and Indian royalty, leading to numerous commissions. He later established the Ravi Varma Press, which revolutionized Indian art by making affordable lithographs of his paintings. This not only democratized art but also popularized his style across the subcontinent.

Despite his acclaim, Varma’s life was not without controversy. He faced criticism for his adoption of European painting techniques, which some traditionalists saw as a betrayal of Indian artistic traditions. Additionally, his portrayal of Hindu gods and goddesses in a realistic, human-like manner stirred debates about religious propriety. Varma’s personal life was as colorful as his art. He was born into an aristocratic family and received his early education from palace tutors. He married Pururuttathi Nal Bhageerathi Amma from a noble family, and they had several children. Despite his privileged background, Varma’s work often depicted the lives of ordinary people, which endeared him to the public.
