Manmohan Singh, the 14th Prime Minister of India, remains a towering figure in Indian politics and economics. Renowned for his quiet dignity and steadfast commitment to the nation, Singh passed away peacefully on 26 December 2024, at the age of 92 years. His demise marks the end of an era that saw India’s economic landscape transformed under his leadership. Born into modest beginnings, Singh’s intellectual prowess became evident early in life, propelling him to international acclaim as an economist. As India’s Finance Minister in 1991, he spearheaded historic economic reforms, liberalizing the economy and steering it out of a severe crisis. His policies laid the foundation for India’s growth into a global economic powerhouse.In 2004, Singh became India’s first Sikh Prime Minister, leading the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government for two consecutive terms. His tenure was marked by significant initiatives, including the Right to Information Act, the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, and a landmark nuclear agreement with the United States.Despite his achievements, Singh faced criticism for his perceived lack of political assertiveness. Nevertheless, his personal integrity and dedication to public service earned him widespread respect.
