A photo exhibition by Dr. Vajranabh Nataraj Maharshi, showcasing the beauty of migratory birds at Kolleru Lake, was held on February 14, 2025, at Sudharma Auditorium, Hindu College of Engineering & Technology. The event also marked the launch of the teaser for Mystic Mountain Scapes, a documentary on artist Vijayakumar Somanchi, shot by Dr. Maharshi and sponsored by the AP State Creativity & Culture Commission. The exhibition was presented by Kalapeetham, an art organization from Guntur. 

Inauguration and Address by Dignitaries

Vijayakumar, Secretary of Kalapeetham, welcomed the guests and highlighted Dr. Maharshi’s struggles in capturing mesmerizing images of Kolleru’s diverse birdlife. He emphasized the importance of promoting Kolleru as a tourist destination and the need for an art academy and a permanent gallery to support artists. He also shared his experience working with Dr. Maharshi, describing their collaboration as a harmonious blend of vision and creativity. 

Kalapeetham President Sri S.V.S. Lakshminarayana stressed the need to inspire the younger generation through such exhibitions. He spoke about the emotional connections of birds, particularly in their nurturing habits, and praised Dr. Maharshi’s ability to capture these moments. He noted that Kolleru is home to various bird species like pelicans, storks, ibises, spoonbills, egrets, herons, ducks, sandpipers, and cormorants, making it a vital ecological haven. 

Guests of Honor

Sri M.V. Raghu, an acclaimed cinematographer with over 50 years of experience, was the chief guest. He spoke about the role of photography in storytelling, lauding Dr. Maharshi’s skill in capturing the essence of both nature and human emotions. He praised Maharshi’s documentary on Vijayakumar Somanchi as a testament to his talent. 

Sri Atluri Narayanarao, Convener of the NTR Literature Commission, highlighted the struggles of artists who pursue their passion despite financial hardships, emphasizing the need to preserve artistic integrity in an increasingly commercialized world. 

Sri R. Mallikhajuna Rao, CEO of the AP State Creativity & Culture Commission, spoke about the ecological importance of Kolleru Lake. He raised concerns about environmental degradation due to encroachments and pollution from fish farming. He praised Kalapeetham’s efforts in raising awareness and urged continued support for conservation initiatives. 

Young cinematographer Sri Siddam Manohar (Jathi Ratnalu fame) encouraged the youth to take responsibility for preserving nature and heritage. He reminded them of India’s rich natural beauty and the importance of conservation. 

Felicitation of Distinguished Artists

Kalapeetham honored two distinguished artists: Veena Vidwan Sri K.V. Ananta Sayanam, a child prodigy and renowned musician, and artist Sri Md. Osman Khan, known for his mastery in capturing the anatomy and spirit of horses in his artwork. 

Conclusion and Vote of Thanks

Dr. Maharshi expressed his gratitude to the Culture Commission, Kalapeetham, and the college authorities for supporting his exhibition. He emphasized the ethics and responsibilities of photographers and urged students to prioritize ecological conservation. He warned against unchecked human greed and advocated for love and tolerance toward nature. 

The event concluded with a resounding message: Art and nature are deeply connected, and it is the responsibility of both artists and society to preserve them for future generations.
