Kota Srinivasa Rao: A Legend Remembered

Kota Srinivasa Rao, one of the most iconic and versatile actors in Indian cinema, passed away on July 13, 2025, in Hyderabad at the age of 83. With a career spanning over four decades and more than 750 films to his name, Rao leaves behind a legacy that few can rival in Telugu film history.
Born on July 10, 1942, in Kankipadu, Andhra Pradesh, Rao began his professional life in science and banking before discovering his true calling in theatre. It was his commanding stage presence and precise diction that caught the eye of filmmakers. He made his film debut in Pranam Khareedu (1978), but it was Aha Naa Pellanta (1987) that made him a household name, thanks to his unforgettable comic performance.
What made Kota truly exceptional was his range. He could be menacing as a corrupt politician (Gaayam), hilarious as a cunning landlord (Aha Naa Pellanta), or deeply moving in emotional roles (Bommarillu). His ability to breathe life into any character-be it villain, comedian, or elder statesman-earned him widespread admiration. Fluent in multiple languages, Rao also acted in Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi films, seamlessly adapting to each regional style.
Apart from cinema, Kota Srinivasa Rao served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Vijayawada East between 1999 and 2004, representing the Bharatiya Janata Party. Though he later stepped away from politics, his stint in public service was marked by integrity and commitment.
In 2015, he was honoured with the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian awards, for his contributions to the arts. He also received nine Nandi Awards, celebrating his enduring excellence in performance.
His final years were marked by illness, and he had retired from acting. His passing, just three days after his 83rd birthday, triggered an outpouring of grief across the film industry. Tributes poured in from megastar Chiranjeevi, Ravi Teja, Mohan Babu, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who hailed him as a “master of his craft.”
Kota Srinivasa Rao was more than an actor-he was a force of nature, a storyteller, and a pillar of Telugu cinema. Though he is no longer with us, his characters, performances, and voice will echo in the hearts of millions for years to come.
