Smiles of North-East

It is a great pleasure to present my photographs and reflections on North-East India. My first visit to the region was in 1985, when I travelled to Guwahati and Shillong—a journey that changed the way I saw the world. Since then, I have returned many times, drawn not only by its breathtaking landscapes but also by the warmth and generosity of its people. Over the years, I have formed deep friendships in the North-East, and their kindness, resilience, and ever-present smiles have left a lasting impression on me. This book is dedicated to them.
In my early years as a video journalist, capturing moments was often challenging. The equipment was heavy, deadlines were demanding, and there was rarely time to pause and observe through a still lens. Each assignment required speed and precision, leaving little space for quiet reflection. However, with the arrival of digital technology around 2007, the way I worked began to change. Cameras became lighter, faster, and far more intuitive. Suddenly, it was possible to capture fleeting moments of life—even from the back of a moving vehicle or during a brief pause between assignments. Gradually, photography evolved from a professional necessity into a deeply personal form of expression.
For me, photography is much more than documentation; it is storytelling. While words describe a place or a moment, images have the power to reveal emotions, relationships, and truths that words often struggle to convey. A single photograph can carry layers of history, silence, and meaning within its frame. It allows the viewer to pause, reflect, and connect with the story behind the image.
Most of the photographs in this collection are presented in black and white. This is a deliberate choice. Without the distraction of colour, the viewer begins to notice the subtle play of light, shadow, and texture. Monochrome photography, to me, reveals the essence of a moment and brings forward the emotional depth within an image.
This book is therefore a tribute—to the landscapes that continue to inspire me, to the people who welcomed me with warmth, and to the quiet, powerful moments that spoke beyond words.
