Transforming Stone into Stories

By Pragya Saxena

A brand of unparalleled passion and drive, Tutu Patnaik has dedicated himself to sculptural practice, enduring a legacy that spans over five decades. He is a contemporary sculptor distinguished by the deeply rooted artistic traditions of India, carrying on the sculptural praxis bestowed upon him by his mentor Balbir Singh Katt with religious fervor.

Benifected with a mindset most pragmatic, he is a man of action defined by a profound sense of authenticity, humility, and diligence. Honoring this courageous lineage of exploration and experimentation, Tutu’s sculptures find distinction in material innovations and technical experiments.

Contributing to the advent of contemporary sculptural practices, he blends classical Indian motifs with narratives relevant to our times, creating a remarkable resonance of cultural dialogues. It is with this unique signature showcase of India’s rich artistic traditions that his works have garnered a ubiquitous international presence and recognition worldwide. His larger-than-life sculptures stand resolute all across the globe as a testament to his expertise and dedication to maintaining the integrity of his ideas and art.

Today, Patnaik represents not only the Indian subcontinent but the entirety of Southeast Asia on global platforms expressing his very individual yet universal voice through his sculptures. Driven by a yearning for monumental scales, Tutu Patnaik’s sculptures adorn public spaces worldwide, making Indian art accessible to audiences across the globe. His incessant pursuit of his passion for sculpture draws appreciation for the cultural heritage and contemporary artistry of India from the global sphere

Much like a cinematic screenplay, the story of this renowned international artist begins in a quaint village on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar. With the backyards of ancient temples serving as his grounds of play; the courtyards his refuge from the heat of lazy afternoons; and the art his magnet, his story unfolds as a theatre of chance. The figures and fragments of the temples, frozen in time yet pulsating with life, become his musings. Growing up breathing in the fragrance of circumambient culture – in the visuals, the sounds, and the very essence of his motherland – Tutu’s worldview is naturally indoctrinated into the aesthetic that his creative expression would one day embrace.

India is the cradle of civilization, and what a blessing it is to experience the beauty of this cultural depth entwined in even the most mundane and comfortable aspects of life. As he looks back, Tutu recollects the confetti of these memories with nostalgia, fondness, and much gratitude. He continues to draw from the visuals and chronicles preserved in these memories of his childhood experiences to fuel his sculptural practice. This practice, so intimate and individual, yet profound, often reflects cultural narratives drawn from his own experiences and the rich heritage of his surroundings, thereby preserving and promoting India’s cultural history.

The more one explores the story of Tutu Patnaik, the more one becomes intrigued by the enigma of Balbir Singh Katt. In his own words, “Katt sir’s chisel,” Tutu reflects, “forged not just sculptures, but the very essence of greatness within me.” From vision to skills, Tutu dedicates all of this and more to the Midas touch of the guru he feels most privileged to have known. One can’t help but wonder if it was the alchemy of the master or the unconditional and selfless devotion of the disciple that fueled the beauty of this sculptural legacy. What must have been the magnetism of a mentor, the love for the craft he instilled in his pupils, and the vision with which he showed the world of art that once under the wing of Katt sir’s tutelage, Tutu Patnaik continues to identify a student forever! A student of life, a student of culture, and a student of the tradition of sculpture, and continues this lineage of life-defining mentorship, shaping the next generations of artists, with the teachings of his mentor now the axis of his entire life.

At the heart of his artistry beats the quintessence of the Indian consciousness. The depth of mythology and Cultural tales nested in the fragments from Old Bhubaneswar lends a timeless flight to his aesthetics. Yet what makes his sculptures stand out and tall is the courageous exploration of material possibilities, reflecting the childlike curiosity once shaped by Katt sir in the studios of Banaras Hindu University and the exceptional exertions in the mountains that he continues to carry within him.

What will you see if you can look beyond the constructed realities of the world around you?

“The temples of Bhubaneswar aren’t relics of the past,” he muses. “They’re the core memories of my playful childhood, shaping my very identity and finding expression in my works.” A true observer if there ever was one, Tutu is an artist shaped by a rare instinct to perceive and value the simplistic essence of the world around him. A holistic observer of the human condition, he finds depth and real connections with his surroundings. There is an undeniable magic in his art, and I see the spell being cast in the vision with which he sees the world around him.

Tutu Patnaik is an artist carving a generational legacy with his sculptures in the contemporary art landscape. If one wishes to come close to understanding his art, the key lies neither in the concepts nor in the purpose, but in the process embarked upon by this herculean sculptor. Blooming under the gravity of his Katt sir’s own, it is his material, physical, and spiritual relationship that he has learned to build with his stones that sets him apart. He calls it the blessing of his tutelage that his young eyes could always see magic where others saw the stone; an opportunity to test his metal where others saw the intimidation of scale, and an expression of his soul where others saw just sculptural visuals. From quarrying a block of stone to carving it into a sculpture, one chisel strike at a time is a meditation that calls for the nurturing of a mother, the trust of a friend, and the vision of a creator. It is with this instinct and a humble perception of himself as a mere vessel of the creation that he, I believe, brings his sculptures to life.

FRAGMENT

With each sculpture a labor of love, Tutu’s works bridge the past and present, ensuring the sustenance of the traditions and philosophies of Indian sculpture through stories that are as much a part of the world as they are of him.

As one of the rare artists still working on monumental levels and carving with his hands, Tutu Patnaik ardently upholds the prestigious legacy of the modern masters whom he has the privilege to forever treasure as the guides of his spirit. His larger-than-life stones are renowned for their univocal narratives with intricate details of sculptural planes. With an equally larger-than-life aesthetic voice, his iconic style is aptly regarded as an homage to the traditional depths of India by audiences. But those who know his heart can hear the recollections from core memories in the minutiae of his works. The motifs in his sculptures weave together a lyrical concert of the India of his pride, yet each of his sculptures is an autobiographical poetry. With the sound of each chisel, as he keeps on carving exceptional images in stone, what truly emerges is a clearer illumination of his own character.

I have stones to carve, stories to carve into stones,” he says, embodying the defining humility and the heart of the true artist he is. Though there are many, his is a legacy that shall not be measured in accolades but in the stories he brings to life.

Tutu Patnaik is a preeminent sculptor from the contemporary landscapes, who, with his herculean pursuits of passion, has put India on the map of the world. His monumental stone sculptures are finding roots in spaces all across the globe, yet I see him as an artist on a quest to build mirrors – each work presenting a better and more authentic reflection of the spirit of our culture, entwined with his own story. Tutu Patnaik’s sculptures are a universal pursuit of discovering the self.
