The evocative world of Sonam Kapoor

Text by Erum Khan

There are paintings that ask to be looked at, and then there are paintings that make us slow down. Sonam Kapoor’s work belongs to the latter. A graduate in Economics from Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi University, Kapoor found her way to painting at Triveni Kala Sangam. What began as an artistic pursuit gradually became a more intimate way of observing the natural world ,,,its changing light, quiet textures, colours, shadows and fleeting moments of beauty.
Her exhibition, Whispers of the Wild, emerges from this deeply personal relationship with nature. Kapoor does not seem interested in simply reproducing a landscape. Instead, she searches for its mood ….the silence of a forest path, the movement of water, the roughness of an old tree, the warmth of autumn foliage or the stillness that settles over a mountain lake.
In The Quiet Abundance, foliage appears almost to breathe across the canvas, while Through the Mountains draws the eye into the vastness of a winding river and distant terrain. Works such as Into the Woods, The Wild Terrain and Edge of Victoria carry a sense of wandering, as though the viewer has stepped momentarily away from the familiar world.
There is an equally beautiful restraint in her smaller works. Quiet Tide, Deep Stillness and Wild Waters capture nature in fragments …..intimate impressions rather than grand declarations. Perhaps this is what makes Kapoor’s paintings quietly compelling. They leave room for the viewer. They do not insist; they invite.
Kapoor once described her approach simply: “I like to paint what I feel.” That sentiment runs gently through this body of work. Her canvases are not only about what she has seen, but about what those encounters have left behind within her.
Dedicated to her beloved mother, Whispers of the Wild carries another layer of emotion. Nature becomes memory, and painting becomes a way of holding on to what cannot be held. In Sonam Kapoor’s world, the wild does not roar. It whispers …..through leaves, water, stone and light. And if we pause long enough, we begin to hear it.
